In 1937, after 20 years of research at the suggestion of Andrew Carnegie, Napoleon Hill published the motivational personal development book Think and Grow Rich. Napoleon Hill penned the famous quote, “Whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve.” I read this book about 15 years ago was so impressed that a few years later I bought the audio tapes to listen to on my daily commute.
The book reflects on life lessons imparted to Hill by some of America’s most prominent business people of the time. It’s important to note that Think and Grow Rich is not a book about making money. In fact, money comes at the bottom of Hill’s list of the 12 great riches of life, which he lists in order of importance, as being:

When a product is purchased, who would you say owns the rights to the customer – the retailer or the manufacturer? As part of the checkout process, the customer is asked if they would like to receive communications from the retailer in the future or to opt out. So in this instance the retailer has custody. If the customer wants to receive information about product updates, they need to go to the manufacturer’s Web site and register their product. So in this instance the manufacturer has custody. If they do both, the customer is signed up to receive offers from both the retailer and the manufacturer, so both have some degree of custody.

Ten years ago, I did a triathalon. OK, it was actually one of those mini-triathalons – a 4.1-mile run, a 13-mile bike ride and a 4-mile paddle in canoe or kayak. I mention this because I just found out about the Krispy Kreme Challenge ( that takes place on February 6, 2010, because one of our clients is taking the challenge. The challenge is to run two miles from the N.C. State University Bell Tower to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace Street, down a dozen (yes 12) Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and run back to the Bell Tower, all in under one hour. I’m sure I could manage the run. Not so sure I could keep down the dozen doughnuts. But our intrepid client is going to give it the old college try and will not be alone. In fact, the number of Krispy Kreme Challengers this year is estimated at 6,000 racers, runners and supporters who will consume over 72,000 doughnuts (or donuts – both spellings appear on their Web site), raising money for N.C. Children’s Hospital and hopefully garnering a Guiness Book World Record in the process.

One of the best channel marketing tools for marketing planning is the Audience Interaction Model (AIM). The AIM was originally created by Wunderman back in the 1980’s, when channel marketing was the precursor to Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as we know it today. Once CRM came about, people stopped using AIM because they had computers to map customer relationships for them. The only problem with this approach is the sheer complexity of CRM. AIM is better utilized for specific marketing opportunities that need to be addressed.

In addition to a fantastic night watching our clients bullride at Stoney’s and ALPHA’s early morning party at Tao, I did manage to spend some time on the floor learning about all the latest consumer electronic innovations at this year’s CES. Favorite products included the Lenovo Skylight Smartbook, which won Best Mobile Device, and the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid, which won Best Convergence Device. You can check out the latest products, click here.
